A recipe closely guarded for years makes the Abruzzese version of the Sfogliatella something you cannot taste before leaving.
In Lama dei Peligni, a small village at the foot of the Majella, every year hosts a festival dedicated to the tasty and fragrant local sweet “Sfogliatella”, whose recipe secret has been secretly guarded by the local population “Lamesi”.
Its origins date back to the early 900, when Lady Anna, wife of Baron Tabbasi, moved to Lama and adapted the recipe of the most famous Neapolitan puff to the availability of the local ingredients.
So the dough, with the use of lard, became softer, and the stuffing modified to the use grape jam, black cherry jam, cooked must and nuts.
The recipe was a closely guarded secret for years and only in the 60s spread among Lamesi. The event is organized by the local guild “Il Sorriso”.
