Costa dei Trabocchi
While enjoying your summer holiday in Abruzzo, you cannot miss a taste of the Adriatic fish. It’s a different story than the fish caught in the Northern European oceans.
In some locality men with a fish van are going around the inland bringing fresh fish to the door that is not too much different than going shopping.
If you are green thumb and want to go for sustainable caught fresh fish, perhaps having a look at a piece of tradition, do try a Trabocco.
The trabocco is a unique fishing house typical of the Abruzzo coastal area; you can find it only here and nowhere else between Francavilla and Vasto, along 15km of coastline declared part of the UNESCO heritage.
Fishermen in the past used to fish from those houses, usually built on stilts and located some metres from the shore, and you can reach them via a makeshift board-walk. The fishing lines come straight out of this house and are made of iron – so it’s a bit like a fishing machine.
During the summer season the “traboccanti” (Trabocco’s owner) organise fish based dinner served on the Trabocco. You must book in advance if you don’t want miss this experience.
For more information about Trabocchi you can visit the Cala Lenta web site, which provide information on the local Trabocchi festival sponsored by the Slow Food Movement.
Regrettably the web site is in Italian only, but you can always use Google Translate.
We thought to make your life easier, and we have provided the itinerary from our Villa straight to the “Costa dei Trabocchi”, highlighting the most interesting one on our coastline.
Feel free to stop by at one of them or visit all at the same time. But remember, Abruzzo it’s not just made by Trabocchi.
